LAKE BOSOMTWE UNDER THREAT AS ENCROACHERS CLEAR VEGETATION

Ghana’s only natural lake and a major tourist site is facing serious threats after unknown encroachers cleared large portions of vegetation along its banks.

The unidentified individuals have removed trees and shrubs, exposing the shoreline to direct sunlight and risking the ecological integrity of the natural reserve. Excavation activities are ongoing at the site, with more vegetation being cleared. This has raised concerns about the long-term sustainability of the lake.

On Wednesday, 15 April 2026, Ashanti Regional Minister Dr. Frank Amoakohene ordered an immediate halt to all land-clearing activities around Lake Bosomtwe. He directed the Environmental Protection Authority to investigate the incident and lead efforts to restore the affected areas.

The EPA’s Ashanti Regional Director, Dr. Nyantakyi, has since commenced investigations into the destruction of the critical bio-conservation zone by unknown persons along the banks of the lake.

Nana Kwaku Bio, the Abaase Dikro, said the EPA has instructed him not to allow excavators to work on the riverbanks, and he will ensure the directive is enforced.

Residents have also voiced worry over how Lake Bosomtwe is being treated, calling for urgent action to protect the lake from further degradation.
