14-Year-Old BECE Candidate Dies After Contact With Fallen Power Line at Nkawkaw

Nkawkaw, Eastern Region — April 20, 2026
A 14-year-old Basic Education Certificate Examination candidate, identified as Richmond, has died after being electrocuted at Nkawkaw in the Eastern Region.
The incident occurred at White House, a suburb of Nkawkaw, following a heavy rainstorm that brought down a main electricity cable. Initial reports indicate Richmond was playing football in the area when he came into contact with the live line.

Kingsley Agbesi, Electricity Company of Ghana Manager for Kwahu West, said preliminary findings show the boy fell onto the cable while playing. He added that crops planted close to power lines hamper maintenance and raise safety risks.

Agbesi urged the public to avoid farming or planting near electricity lines and stressed strict adherence to safety rules around high-tension cables, particularly during the rainy season.
The landlord of the deceased, Yaw Afrifa, described the incident as shocking and devastating for the community.

Residents are calling on authorities to ensure regular maintenance of power lines to prevent similar occurrences.
Police have confirmed that the body has been deposited at the morgue. Investigations are ongoing.
