Today,May 9,2026 as we lay to rest Wofa Yaw Sarpong, we honour a life that truly blessed a nation. A man whose voice, faith, and ministry shaped the sound of Christian worship across generations.
Born Osomafo Yaw Sarpong in Accra, his early life was marked by both heritage and hardship. His father served as a Member of Parliament during the era of Kwame Nkrumah, but after the 1966 overthrow, his father was imprisoned and later passed away. This led his widowed mother to relocate the family to Akyease in the Ashanti Region.
From his early days in church choirs, Yaw Sarpong discovered his calling using music as a ministry. By the early 1970s, he had begun a journey that would blend traditional Ghanaian rhythms with powerful praise and worship.
In 1986, he founded the Asomafo Band (“Messengers”), a gospel group that became a cornerstone of Ghanaian gospel music. Formed initially in Liberia, the group later returned to Ghana and gained nationwide recognition for their rich harmonies, disciplined arrangements, and spiritually uplifting songs.
Over decades, he recorded more than 25 albums and over 100 songs, blessing the nation with timeless classics like Wo Haw Ne Hwan, Tie Obiaa, Aduro Yesu, and Awurade Kasa songs that continue to resonate in churches and homes.
His impact did not go unnoticed. In 2025, he was honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Telecel Ghana Music Awards, celebrating his immense contribution to gospel music.
Beyond the music, Wofa Yaw Sarpong was a mentor, a leader, and a bridge between generations guiding young artists while staying grounded in faith and truth.
After battling health challenges, he passed on 20 January 2026.
Today, we say our final goodbye.
A voice may be silent, but the message lives on.
A legend may be gone, but the legacy will never fade.
Wofa Yaw Sarpong didn’t just sing he ministered. His songs were messages of hope, faith, and devotion.
May his soul rest in perfect peace, and may his melodies forever echo in our praise.
