Dr. Bawumia Accuses NDC Government of Undermining Free Speech and Democracy

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, NPP flagbearer, has accused the NDC government of carrying out an “endless assault” on the rights of NPP officers, activists, and supporters, saying democracy and free speech are under siege.

In a statement dated Wednesday, May 13, 2026, Bawumia said arrests, detentions, and what he described as “unconscionable bail conditions” have been a persistent feature since the NDC took office on January 7, 2025.

He cited the recent arrest, detention, and release of David Essandoh over social media comments on the return of dumsor, and the detention of NPP Bono Regional Chairman Kwame Baffoe Abronye as the latest examples.

Bawumia condemned what he called an “unholy collaboration” between the Executive, state investigative agencies, and some elements within the judiciary to use intimidation and harassment to silence NPP members. He warned that “the day of accountability will come and the abuse of State power will be accounted for.”

He urged NPP members to remain firm and continue holding the government accountable, saying the party “cannot surrender” democracy to intimidation.

The NDC government has not publicly responded to the allegations as of press time.
