
Two Pupils Killed, 40 Others Injured in School Bus Crash at Assin Kwafokrom
Two pupils of Alice Elites Academy, a preparatory school at Assin Edubiase in the Assin South District of the Central Region, have lost their lives in a tragic road accident involving a school bus.
The deceased, a boy and a girl, age ranges 3 and 5 were among more than 40 pupils travelling in a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter bus with registration number AS 2218-20 when the accident occurred on the Assin Kwafokrom–Homaho road.
According to information gathered, the bus veered off the road and plunged into a river after the driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle.
Confirming the incident, the Central North Regional Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) Commander, ASP Wonder Lumor, disclosed that a total of 40 injured pupils were rushed to nearby health facilities for treatment.
He explained that 22 of the victims were transported to St. Francis Xavier Hospital, while the remaining 18 were taken to the Assin Edubiase Health Centre for medical attention.
ASP Lumor further revealed that all 40 injured pupils received treatment and have since been discharged to their respective families.
The MTTD Commander also indicated that investigations have commenced into the circumstances surrounding the accident, adding that the school proprietor and other responsible persons could be held accountable if negligence is established.
Speaking to Kasapa News Yaw Boagyan,one of the affected parents, Mr. Douglas Odoom, expressed grief over the incident and called for stricter measures to ensure the safety of schoolchildren during transportation.
Meanwhile, the tragic incident has thrown the Assin Edubiase community into mourning, as families, residents, and school authorities struggle to come to terms with the loss of the two young pupils.
Police investigations are ongoing to establish the exact cause of the crash.
