Former Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NPP, Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has withdrawn from the NPP National Chairmanship race.
In a statement dated Monday, August 24, 2026, he said the decision followed “many nights of prayer, sober reflection and consultations” with his family, legal team, party elders and supporters.
According to him, his current circumstances should not become an additional burden to the party as it rebuilds towards the 2028 elections.
He said: _”This is not the decision my heart desired, but sometimes, true love requires us to release what we deeply want to protect what we love even more.”_
He also urged his supporters to remain united and rally behind the NPP flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
He is currently serving a 20-year sentence over illegal mining-related charges, which his legal team is appealing.
