Ashanti Youth For Development has petitioned the Chief Justice of Ghana over statements allegedly made by Hon. Alexander Afenyo-Markin, saying they may undermine public confidence in the judiciary.
In a petition dated May 18, 2026, the group told the Chief Justice that comments attributed to Afenyo-Markin have generated public debate and could be perceived as disrespectful or prejudicial toward the judiciary and its officers.
The petition argues that public comments by influential persons and political leaders should be measured and respectful to preserve trust in the judicial system. It states that if such statements are left unchecked, they could weaken citizens’ confidence in the administration of justice and encourage disregard for judicial institutions.
Ashanti Youth For Development requested that the Chief Justice’s office review the comments and their implications, take any appropriate action under the law and ethical standards governing public conduct, and continue to uphold the dignity, integrity, and independence of the judiciary.
The group said it filed the petition to protect democratic governance, constitutional order, and public confidence in Ghana’s justice delivery system.
