MTN Ghana,DVLA, MTTD Train Over 300 Vehicle Users On Road Safety In Kumasi

MTN Ghana, in collaboration with the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority and the Motor Traffic and Transport Department, MTTD, has organized a training workshop for over 300 MTN vehicle users in Kumasi.

The workshop aimed to help prevent road crashes and ensure the safety of drivers and other road users.

Participants were taken through topics including defensive driving, road traffic regulations, and the dangers of speeding and phone use while driving.

ACP Alexander Obeng,Ashanti regional commander of MTTD,Ghana Police Service said the service in collaboration with DVLA has rolled out a new digital enforcement system to support the Road Traffic Regulation 2012, LI 2180 aimed at improving compliance and road safety nationwide.

He maintained that, the system is directly linked to the DVLA driver and vehicle licence register through an API.

Under the new arrangement, police officers can conduct on-the-spot checks using a driver’s licence number. The system will then generate an electronic notice of violation, which is sent to the driver’s phone as a text message. Fines and penalties are to be paid on the ghana.gov.gh platform.

He said as part of the enforcement of illegal sirens and Strobe lights, the Police have intercepted 11,292 vehicles nationwide over the past month and a half for the unlawful use of sirens, strobe lights, and beacon lights and 1,736 vehicles were intercepted in the Ashanti Region and Accra/its environs.

He added that the exercise is ongoing across all 205 police regions.

As part of the session,Mr Kwasi Bonnah Otuo Sireboe,acting director for vehicle inspection department,DVLA also educate the participants on the proper use of driver’s license, license classes and the need to ensure licenses are valid and registered on the DVLA system.

He commended the management of MTN Ghana for the initiative which he thinks will help improve road safety as well as protecting company’s staff and urged other institutions to adapt similar measures.
