Abuakwa-Kobeng Landowners, Shop Owners Protest 24-Hour Economy Market Project

Landowners and shop owners at Kobeng, near Tweneboa Kodua Basic School in Abuakwa, staged a peaceful demonstration this morning over plans by the Atwima Nwabiagya South Municipal Assembly to use their school park for a 24-Hour Economy Market.

The aggrieved residents, including mechanics, tailors, hairdressers, food vendors, and young sportsmen, wore red attire and marched through some principal streets. They say the Assembly took the decision without following due process in acquiring the land.

The protesters say they had permission from authorities of Tweneboa Kodua Basic School and the Kobeng-Shiremanso Family, who own the land. But they woke up to an eviction notice from the Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Wisdom Osei Boamah.

According to the shop owners, the move is unlawful because the landowners have denied any involvement in the Assembly’s decision.

The residents also complained that the land is reserved for social gatherings and gives young people an opportunity to develop their football talents.

Some affected traders are calling on authorities to intervene to avert any future disaster.

Members of the Kobeng-Shiremanso Royal Family have appealed to His Royal Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II to intervene and help maintain peace between them and the Assembly.

Mr. Isaac Bawuah, speaking on behalf of the Shiremanso Stool Land, urged the MCE to seek approval from traditional leaders before taking over the land. He stressed that they are not against development from central government, but due process must be followed.

The Atwima Nwabiagya South Municipal Assembly is yet to officially respond to the protest and has scheduled, June 4,2026 to held sod cutting ceremony for the project.
