Gov’t Re-engages Contractor For Abandoned $180m Afari Military Hospital Project

The Deputy Minister for Defence, Ernest Brogya Genfi, has disclosed that government has re-engaged the contractor for the abandoned Afari Military Hospital project in the Ashanti Region as part of efforts to complete and operationalize the facility.

In a Facebook post on Thursday, June 11, 2026, Mr. Genfi said the government is currently reviewing the contract and assessing available medical equipment in the country to facilitate the speedy completion of the project.

The 500-bed military hospital was originally expected to be completed in 2018.

According to him, the project was initiated in March 2014 when former President John Dramani Mahama cut sod for its construction at Afari.

Valued at $180 million, the hospital was scheduled for completion within 42 months. “Yet 12 years on, the hospital remains uncompleted,” Mr. Genfi noted.

The Deputy Minister added that completing Afari Military Hospital forms part of government’s broader agenda to strengthen healthcare delivery for both military personnel and civilians in the Ashanti Region and beyond.
