Manso Akwasiso Chief Marks 50th Birthday With Gifts for Mothers, Newborns at St. Martin Catholic Hospital

Nana Kwakye Gyimah Yeboah, Chief of Manso Akwasiso in the Amansie South District of the Ashanti Region, marked his 50th birthday by celebrating with mothers and babies born on June 21, 2026 at St. Martin Catholic Hospital, Agroyesum.

As part of the outreach, Nana presented financial support and essential items to six babies born on the day. He extended similar assistance to 11 other mothers who had delivered before June 21.

Speaking to journalists, the chief called on government to introduce fully free maternal healthcare and delivery services for pregnant women. He said many mothers and newborns remain detained in hospital wards after successful deliveries because they cannot pay their bills.

He recalled that in July 2008, former President John Agyekum Kufuor introduced free antenatal care and delivery services under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) to reduce maternal and infant mortality. Nana Kwakye Gyimah Yeboah, however, argued that successive governments have failed to expand the policy enough to protect the most vulnerable.

“Many mothers go through childbirth successfully, yet they and their babies remain trapped in hospital wards because they cannot settle their bills,” he lamented.

After the hospital visit, the chief worshipped with churches in Manso Akwasiso to give thanks for his life and pray for continued favour and peace in his traditional area.

Dr. Abraham Kwame Tandoh, a medical officer at St. Martin Catholic Hospital, also used the occasion to urge pregnant women to prioritize antenatal care. He said early clinic attendance helps detect and manage complications before delivery.
