About 7 Illegal Miners Feared Dead After Galamsey Pit Collapse at Akyem Asaman Tamfoe

About 7 illegal miners are feared dead following the collapse of a galamsey pit at Akyem Asaman Tamfoe in the Eastern Region on Sunday, August 30, 2026.

According to reports, the mining pit had previously been worked on and abandoned. However, some illegal miners reportedly entered the abandoned pit to undertake what is locally referred to as “surplus” mining when the structure suddenly collapsed, trapping several miners underground.

The incident has since triggered concern among residents, with fears that the death toll could rise as rescue efforts continue and the full extent of the disaster is established.

Oyerepa TV/FM Correspondent, George Botha, spoke with a survivor of the incident and the mother of one of the victims, who recounted their ordeal and the circumstances surrounding the tragedy. If you provide the survivor’s and victim’s mother’s accounts, I can also incorporate their exact narratives into the news story and make it broadcast-ready.
