Agogo: Tomato Farmers Arrested For Using Deadly Chemicals For False Ripening

Some tomato farmers at Agogo in the Asante Akim North Municipal,Ashanti Region have been apprehended by the police for allegedly using deadly chemicals to artificially ripen tomatoes.

One of them, a farmer identified as Handyman, was picked up by the Agogo Police Service for inducing false ripening of tomatoes with harmful chemicals.

About 50 bowls of tomatoes, each valued at GH¢800, were seized yesterday.

Some of the farmers are questioning why the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has allowed such chemicals to be sold on the open market if they are harmful.

Another farmer also condemned the arrest, arguing that since the chemicals are openly sold in agro-chemical shops, farmers will continue to buy them.
