Former Asante Akim North MP leads Agogo Traditional Council to Invite Bawumia to Nana Akuoko Sarpong’s 40-Day Celebration

Former Member of Parliament for Asante Akim North, Hon. Kwadwo Baah Agyemang, on Tuesday 28, April 2028,led the Agogo Traditional Council to officially invite *Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia* to the 40-day celebration of the late *Nana Akuoko Sarpong*, Agogo Omanhene.

Hon. Baah Agyemang delivered the invitation on behalf of the Agogo Traditional Council as preparations intensify for the final funeral rites of the late paramount chief.

The 40-day observance for Nana Akuoko Sarpong, who passed away earlier this year, is scheduled for *Thursday, June 4, 2026*, at Agogo in the Asante Akim North Municipality of the Ashanti Region.

 

Dr. Bawumia, the former Vice President, is expected to join chiefs, government officials, and mourners from across the country to pay his last respects to the revered traditional ruler.

 

Nana Akuoko Sarpong served as Agogo Omanhene and was a prominent member of the Ashanti Regional House of Chiefs. His reign was marked by advocacy for education and development in the Agogo area.

 

*1. ENSTOOLMENT & TRADITIONAL AUTHORITY*

 

Nana Akuoko Sarpong was enstooled as Agogomanhene in the late 1970s, becoming custodian of the Agogo Stool, one of the prominent paramountcies in the Asante Kingdom.

 

*Role in Asanteman:* As a paramount chief, Nana sat in the Ashanti Regional House of Chiefs and represented Asante at the National House of Chiefs.

 

Colleagues described him as “an encyclopedia of Asante custom” who often mediated chieftaincy and land disputes across the region.

 

*Style of Leadership:* Nana was known for blending tradition with modernity. He conducted palace proceedings in Twi rich with proverbs but kept meticulous records and data on stool lands, schools, and development projects. “He ruled with proverbs and governed with spreadsheets,” one sub-chief recalled.

 

*2. NATIONAL SERVICE: FROM OIL TO DIPLOMACY*

 

Nana’s service extended far beyond Agogo, making him one of the few traditional rulers to hold top national positions in the 4th Republic.

 

*Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) | 1990s*

Appointed Board Chairman during Ghana’s formative oil exploration period. Oversaw GNPC’s transition from reconnaissance to early offshore partnerships. Industry players credit his tenure for insisting on local content and transparency in negotiations.

 

*Council of State | 2000s*

Served as a Member of the Council of State, the constitutional body that advises the President. He was appointed to represent the Ashanti Region. Known for non-partisan counsel on chieftaincy, education, and resource governance.

Served as Ghana’s Ambassador during the 4th Republic. While posts varied, he was tasked with economic diplomacy and diaspora engagement. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs noted his “ability to explain Ghana through culture.”

2. *Scholarships:* Privately funded fees for dozens of Agogo students from SHS to university level. “He never announced it. You just found your fees paid,” said a KNUST graduate.

3. *Girl-Child Advocacy:* Partnered with NGOs to reduce dropout rates. Agogo’s female SHS enrollment rose significantly during his reign.

 

*Health*

Lobbied successive governments for equipment and staff for *Agogo Presbyterian Hospital*, now a key referral center in Ashanti. Served on hospital boards and led community fundraising during shortages.

 

*Agriculture & Land*

The Agogo Stool controls vast tracts in the Afram Plains. Nana instituted a land registry at the palace to reduce double sales and farmer-herder conflicts. He promoted mechanization and youth in agriculture, linking farmers to MoFA programs.

His palace court was a first point of call for civil disputes. Police in Asante Akim North often referred family and land cases to his arbitration, citing high settlement rates.

*Family:* Married with children and grandchildren. The Agogo Royal Family describes him as a loving father” who insisted all his children learn English and Twi fluently.

 

*Philosophy:* Pan-Africanist who believed chieftaincy must serve development. Famous quote: _“Education is the best land we can give our children. Because no one can litigate it from them.”_

 

*Hobbies:* History, farming, and football. Was a known Asante Kotoko supporter but respected all clubs.
