Man’s Hand Severed in Cutlass Clash Between Security Officer and Galamsey Workers at Akyem Oda

One man is in critical condition after his hand was severed during a violent cutlass clash between a security officer and galamsey workers at Akyem Oda New Station in the Eastern Region on May 8, 2026.

According to Emmanuel Appiah Kubi, Assembly Member for Akyem Aboabo Electoral Area, the incident began at an illegal mining site after a misunderstanding between a security officer and the workers.

“The confusion broke out between the security and the workers at the site, and the security man pulled his gun and shot one of the workers,” Kubi told Holy Living Media.

The confrontation escalated after both parties returned to town. Kubi said the injured worker’s colleagues spotted the security officer and launched a retaliatory attack, leading to a cutlass fight. One person sustained severe injuries, including a severed hand, and is receiving treatment.

The Eastern South Regional Police Command confirmed it restored calm at the New Station Area after videos of young men wielding cutlasses circulated online. Police said officers found two suspects receiving treatment:

George Okyere, 30,with a deep cut on his forehead and his right finger chopped off, at Oda Jubilee Hospital.

Paul Pascalele*, with a deep cut on his right hand, at Akyem Oda Government Hospital.

Police also arrested Evans Adayele in his hideout to assist with investigations. Efforts are underway to arrest other suspects.
