Mining Communities Urged to Explore Supply Chain Jobs, Not Just Direct Employment

The Chief Operating Officer of the Ghana Chamber of Mines, Ahmed Dasana Nantogmah, says mining communities must look beyond direct mine jobs to benefit fully from the sector.

Speaking at the Chamber’s Mining Development Forum under the theme “Beyond Royalties: How Mining Communities Can Build Local Industries Around the Mine,” Mr. Nantogmah said responsible mining is key to development, alongside agriculture.

“Mining creates far more opportunities beyond direct employment,” he said. “The sector generates demand in areas such as catering, transport, logistics, fabrication, maintenance, construction, agribusiness, and education.”

He noted these areas hold significant potential for local businesses, youth employment, and skills development, but said many of the opportunities remain underutilized.

Meanwhile, Ahafo Regional Minister Charity Gardiner urged residents in mining communities to explore alternative jobs linked to mining activities instead of relying solely on direct employment with companies such as Newmont Corporation.

She encouraged individuals to take advantage of the broader economic value chain created by mining to improve their livelihoods.

The forum brought together industry players, local authorities, and community leaders to discuss how mining areas can build local industries around mine operations.
