Armed Men Attack Nwiso, Burn Bikes, Hold Chief Hostage; Residents Demand Security

Residents of Nwiso in the Birim North District of the Eastern Region are living in fear following a violent attack by a group of armed men, with locals alleging links to foreign nationals.

Eyewitnesses say the attackers, some reportedly in military-style clothing, stormed the community, burning several motorbikes, destroying property, and briefly holding the Kyidomhene of the area hostage. He was later released.

 

“They came suddenly, burning bikes and chasing people. We didn’t know where to run,” one resident said. “We were scared for our lives.”

The chief of Nwiso has condemned the incident, describing it as unacceptable. “Our people are living in fear. We are calling on the government and security agencies to act swiftly and bring the perpetrators to justice,” he said.

Some victims reported losing large sums of money and goods in the attack, worsening their situation.

Residents claim the attackers were operating under the direction of foreign nationals linked to mining Company.

 

They allege the company has been attempting to forcefully enter the community for mining activities, which they strongly oppose.

 

Tensions over mining have been rising in the area. The Akwansera Hene of Akyem Kotoku, Obirempong Kwame Akomeah, has warned that the company must compensate affected residents or risk further confrontation.

 

He is appealing to authorities to increase security presence in Nwiso to prevent further violence.

 

According to eyewitnesses, several motorbikes were set ablaze, while drinks, cash, and other property were also destroyed as terrified residents fled.
