Cocoa Farmers Petition COCOBOD Over Payment Delays, Threaten Alternative Buyers

The Ghana National Cocoa Farmers Association [GNACOFA] has petitioned the Ghana Cocoa Board [COBOD] over persistent payment delays and inefficiencies in the cocoa purchasing system, warning that farmers may seek alternative markets if the issue is not resolved.

In the petition dated May 11, 2026, GNACOFA said repeated concerns raised by smallholder farmers have not been addressed, leaving many facing financial hardship.

The association noted that under current law, farmers are restricted from selling cocoa to anyone other than the Government of Ghana through COCOBOD and its licensed buying companies. The law also requires prompt and full payment upon delivery.

“Farmers entered into this arrangement in good faith, and it is expected that the Government fulfils its contractual responsibilities. Failure to do so constitutes a breach of trust and agreement,” the petition stated.

GNACOFA is urging COCOBOD and government to be transparent if they can no longer sustainably continue purchasing cocoa from farmers. It called for immediate action to restore confidence in the sector.
