Rotting food, closed hospitals, and struggling cocoa farmers are signs of a deeper governance crisis in Ghana

That was the strong message delivered by Samuel Duku, Convener of the Centre for Democratic Movement (CDM), during a press conference in Accra.

Addressing the media, Samuel Duku expressed concern over the continued closure of the Weija Paediatric Hospital despite reports that the facility is completed and equipped. He described the situation as unacceptable, warning that children and vulnerable families are suffering while bureaucratic and procurement disputes remain unresolved.

He also raised alarm over the worsening food glut crisis affecting farmers across the country, where tonnes of maize, rice, tomatoes, and other food crops are reportedly rotting due to poor market systems, inadequate storage facilities, and weak government intervention.

On the cocoa sector, Samuel Duku said cocoa farmers are increasingly facing hardship due to rising production costs, pricing concerns, illegal mining activities, and declining confidence in state support systems.

According to him, the three crises reflect a broader problem of weak institutional coordination, delayed decision-making, and governance inefficiency.

The CDM is calling for urgent government action, including independent audits into stalled health projects, stronger support for farmers, expansion of food storage systems, and policies to protect cocoa farmers and restore confidence in the economy.
