5-Year-Old Pupil Dies After Snake Bite At Ahomakormua D/A Primary School; Parents Blame Bushy Compound

A 5-year-old Kindergarten 2 pupil of Ahomakormua D/A Primary School in the Wassa East District of the Western Region has died after she was bitten by a snake on the school compound.

The incident reportedly occurred during break time while pupils were playing on the premises. The victim, identified as Christiana Opare, was allegedly bitten by a snake said to have emerged from overgrown vegetation around the school.

She was rushed to the Ekutuase CHPS Compound for first aid, but was later referred to the Elmina Hospital due to the severity of the bite. She is said to have died on the way to the hospital.

Speaking to Oyerepa News, the father of the deceased, Mr. Ernest Opare, accused school authorities of negligence. He said the bushy nature of the school compound provided hiding places for reptiles and endangered pupils.

“Authorities left the environment bushy. That overgrown grass gave snakes a place to hide. If they had acted fast to get her medical help, maybe my daughter would be alive today,” he alleged.

The mother, Ama Vida, also called on the Ghana Education Service and school management to prioritize pupil safety by regularly clearing school compounds to prevent similar tragedies.

The Wassa East District Education Directorate has confirmed it has commenced investigations into the incident.
