Kumasi Waste Crisis: Closure of Zoomlion Dumpsites Blamed for Mounting Refuse

Concerns over Kumasi’s worsening refuse situation are mounting, with waste collectors blaming the closure of some Zoomlion Ghana Ltd landfill and dumping sites for delays in waste evacuation.

Speaking to Oyerepa News reporter Joseph Amoateng, the collectors said the shutdown of designated disposal fields has made it difficult for waste management firms and tricycle operators to offload refuse promptly. That, they say, has slowed collection and led to piles of waste building up in several communities.

With fewer approved dumpsites, transporters now travel longer distances to discharge waste, raising fuel costs and turnaround time. The collectors argue this bottleneck is a major reason for the growing heaps of refuse across parts of the Ashanti Regional capital.

They are appealing to the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly, KMA, and other waste management stakeholders to urgently provide accessible disposal sites and improve waste infrastructure to keep the city clean.

Kumasi Mayor Hon. Richard Ofori Boadi, popularly known as “King Zuba”, admitted the main landfill site became full as far back as 2014 and described the current situation as “very urgent”.

He said,the assembly is working through the Ministry of Local Government to secure €6 million to restructure and expand the site to meet demand,adding that a lasting solution requires stakeholder collaboration.
