1 Dead, Elder Shot in Darko Krom Clash with Suspected Illegal Miners in Atiwa East

Tension remains high at Darko Krom in the Atiwa East District of the Eastern Region after a violent clash that left one man dead and a 75-year-old palace elder nursing gunshot wounds.

Community reports indicate that Mr. Atteh Djaba, 36, was struck with a stick during the attack and died on the spot. Opanin Dapaa Samuel, 75, a member of the palace elders, sustained a gunshot wound to the shoulder and has been sent to Koforidua Central Hospital for treatment.

Residents say the incident stems from a dispute with a man known only as “Euro” who came to the area to mine. According to locals, two weeks after “Euro” began operations, he returned to pack up and leave, but had allegedly destroyed nearby river bodies and farmlands.

When elders confronted him and demanded the pits be covered before departure, they claim he returned with a group of macho men armed with sticks and guns who opened fire and assaulted residents.

Police from Anyinam have since visited the scene, conveyed the body of Mr. Djaba to Enyiresi Government Hospital, and transported the injured elder to Koforidua.

The Ghana Police Service has deployed security personnel to Darko Krom to maintain law and order. Anyinam Police are urging calm and appealing to anyone with information to report to the nearest station to aid investigations.

Residents are calling on government and security agencies to act decisively against illegal mining operations and the armed groups accompanying them.
