The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has successfully extinguished a major commercial fire that engulfed the Melcom Ghana Central Warehouse located within the Free Zone Enclave near Niche Cocoa, following 14 hours 14 minutes of sustained firefighting operations.
The distress call was received at 1812hrs on Saturday, 4th July 2026, with first responders arriving at 1826hrs under the supervision of ADO II Quarshie from the Industrial Area Fire Station. Reinforcement units from seven (7) other fire stations were subsequently deployed to support operations.
In total, eight (8) fire appliances and 51 firefighters were mobilized to the scene. The operation was significantly supported by 19 water tankers from local assemblies and private operators, ensuring uninterrupted water supply throughout the firefighting effort.
The fire was confined at 2325hrs on Saturday, brought under control at 0203hrs on Sunday, and finally extinguished at 0840hrs on Sunday, 5th July 2026, following extensive cooling and overhaul operations.
The fire completely destroyed the Melcom Ghana Central Warehouse, covering approximately 315,710.69 square feet (7.25 acres), together with its contents. Items lost included forklifts, electric tricycles, pallet trucks, food items, home appliances, ceramics, and other stored goods.
Firefighters successfully protected and salvaged key critical assets, including:
* 10 heavy-duty generator sets (33kV–550kV)
* 2 transformers (1000kV and 315kV)
* 22 outdoor units of cold compressors
Despite the extensive destruction, adjoining office areas were only partially affected, thanks to swift containment efforts. Importantly, no casualties were recorded.
The operation was supervised by ACFO II Patrick N. Sallah, Tema Regional Fire Commander, and ACFO II Osmond Anum, Deputy Director of Operations, alongside other senior officers who coordinated the response.
Dignitaries present at the scene included Hon. Tetteh Morton, Municipal Chief Executive for Kpone Katamanso, and Dr. Mary Ewusi, Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Free Zones Authority.
The GNFS expresses its appreciation to the Tema Metropolitan Assembly, surrounding local assemblies, private water tanker operators, the Ghana Police Service, facility management, and all stakeholders for their invaluable support during the operation.
