POLICE BEGINS NATIONWIDE OPERATIONS TO TARGET THE UNAUTHORISED USE OF SIREN AND STROBE LIGHTS BY DRIVERS AND VEHICLE OWNERS

The Ghana police Service has embarked on Nationwide operations on our roads, targeting the unauthorized usage of Siren and strobe lights by drivers and vehicle owners.

The Vigorous exercise aiming at Reducing Road traffic crashes that lead to death and injuries.

This nationwide police Enforcement and compliance task was announced by the Director of Education, Research and training of the police MTTD, ACP Alexander Kwaku Obeng in an interview with Okogyeabour Ocran on his maiden appearance on Oyerepa Breakfast Show.

Pursuant to the regulation 74 of the L.i 2180, the use of Siren and Strobe lights are limited to a certain class of Vehicles such as The Vehicles used by Heads of State on official duties, the Police, Ambulances used by Hospitals or Clinics, Bullion Van registered by the DVLA and other Stage recognized Security agencies.

This regulation has taken a sharp contrast of abuse by some individuals who have attained societal recognition by their Wealth and popularity including Men of God, Traditional rulers, Businessmen, Politicians and other class of persons within our communities.

According to ACP Alexander Kwaku Obeng, the police is highly visible on the road to make sure the use of Siren and strobe lights are used by vehicles that are permitted by the laws of Ghana.

In his assertions, the Uniform men are tasked by the police IGP to dismantle those gadgets from vehicles who are not allowed to use them and take records of these recalcitrant drivers.

In the add up to his revelations, the police have so far arrested and dismantled 1,116 vehicles that are not authorized to use the siren.

Giving out the data and the Statistics, the Greater Accra tops the records and followed by the Ashanti region.

The Enforcement and Compliance operations according to ACP Alexander Kwaku Obeng will not shield anybody found culpable and any form of influence or interference by Chiefs or politicians will not be entertained.

Touching on the regulation 65 of Ghana’s road traffic regulations Act 2012, he disclosed that, you cannot fix light on any part of a vehicle.

According to him, it’s illegal to fix light on yhe roof of a vehicle or above the base of the vehicle’s wind screen.

He advised that, drivers who have already done that should dismantle them before they are caught in the police’s web.

On the issue of Availability of these Sirens and Strobe lights on the market, He says it’s not wrong for individuals to import the gadgets to the market spaces but, it must be used by people who are eligible by the law.
