MMDAs Urged to Enforce Sanitation By-laws to Tackle Flooding and Poor Waste Disposal-Nana Abroso

Municipal and District Assemblies across the country have been called upon to strictly enforce sanitation by-laws to promote a cleaner environment and reduce the impact of flooding.

Speaking during the President’s two-day nationwide clean-up exercise in Himan and Prestea, Assembly Member for Prestea Himan Electoral Area and CEO of Nabroso Group of Companies, *Hon. Alex Yaw Baako*, popularly known as _Nana Abroso, said weak enforcement of sanitation regulations has emboldened some residents to dump refuse into gutters and drains.

According to him, the practice continues to contribute to perennial flooding in several parts of the country.

“We cannot continue to watch people dispose of waste indiscriminately into our drainage systems. The Assemblies must strengthen enforcement of the existing by-laws to ensure compliance and protect lives and property,” he told newsmen.

Hon. Baako also cautioned prospective landowners to desist from purchasing and developing wetlands, warning that such activities worsen flooding and environmental degradation.

Also present at the exercise, Hon. Robert Wisdom Cudjoe, Member of Parliament for Prestea Huni Valley Constituency, stressed the need to make environmental cleaning a regular activity rather than a once-in-a-while event.

“We must inculcate the habit of keeping our surroundings clean as part of our daily lives, not only during national exercises,” Hon. Cudjoe stated.

The nationwide clean-up forms part of government’s efforts to address sanitation challenges and mitigate the effects of flooding ahead of the rainy season.
