High School Junction: Residents, Commuters Demand Urgent Action as Faulty Traffic Lights Continue to Claim Lives

Residents and commuters at the High School Junction in Kumasi are calling on the government and relevant road safety authorities to urgently repair the malfunctioning traffic lights at the busy intersection, warning that the persistent fault has contributed to a series of fatal and life-threatening road crashes.

Speaking to Lawson News reporter Samuel Sarkodie on Thursday, July 2, 2026, the residents described the situation as alarming, saying the non-functioning traffic lights have turned the junction into a death trap for motorists, pedestrians, and commercial drivers.

According to them, the absence of a functioning traffic signal has resulted in confusion among road users, particularly during rush hours, increasing the risk of collisions and making it difficult for pedestrians to cross safely.

They lamented that several people have lost their lives, while many others have sustained injuries in accidents that could have been prevented.

The residents expressed frustration over what they described as the prolonged neglect of the traffic lights despite repeated appeals to the appropriate authorities.

They urged the government, the road traffic authorities, and other stakeholders to treat the issue as an emergency before more lives are lost.

Meanwhile, Hon. Amo Kamel, municipal chief executive of Asokwa municipal on phone told Lawson News( Sarkodie Samuel that the road is still under construction, stating that the construction has yet to hand over the road to government.

He further indicated that he has engaged in talks with urban roads authority to address the situation.
