MoMo Steps Up Fight Against Fraud With AI, Device Blocking And “Shine Your Eye” Campaign

Mobile Money service provider MoMo says it is investing heavily in technology and public education to stay ahead of fraudsters and protect customers.

Speaking at a media engagement in Kumasi,Mr David Nana Addai, mobile money channel development manager for northern sector of MTN Ghana, said MoMo is now deploying AI and machine learning to detect suspicious transactions in near real-time, before fraud occurs.

He explained that beyond blocking fraudulent numbers, MoMo has also introduced device blocking.

This means the actual phones used to commit fraud are blocked to serve as a stronger disincentive.

He added that, MoMo is working closely with law enforcement agencies, which has led to more arrests, though details cannot be made public yet due to ongoing investigations.

To deepen public awareness, MoMo has rolled out the *“Shine Your Eye” campaign* with community activations, church outreaches and drama performances. The campaign, he said, has now been adopted by banks as well.

He also announced an ongoing KYC update for agents and merchants.

According to him, any account that is not updated by the deadline will be blocked to prevent compromised SIM cards from being used for fraud.

David Nana Addai, further noted that MoMo is engaging agents and stakeholders to ensure they are not used as channels for fraud, while also intensifying media education.

He assured that as a result of these interventions, fraud cases are declining.
