TECHIMAN MARKET WOMEN EXPRESS DISAPPOINTMENT IN PRESIDENT MAHAMA

Yam sellers at the Techiman Market in Bono East region have appealed directly to President Mahama and his government to intervene as a deepening cash crunch threatens their livelihoods.

The traders voiced their frustration during a visit by the Minority Caucus, led by Hon. Frank Annoh-Dompreh. The group says poor sales and a shortage of cash are crippling trade in Techiman and other major markets nationwide.

Several women broke down while describing the impact. One seller said the collapse of her business has also cost her marriage. “I’ve spent millions of cedis on yam, but it’s just rotting away,” she told the caucus. Others said they now struggle to repay loans taken to stock their stalls, with bags of yam perishing before buyers show up.

The market women asked President Mahama to urgently address the economic squeeze, warning that more businesses will fold if conditions persist. They cited low purchasing power, high transport costs, and limited access to cash as key drivers of the slump.

Hon. Annoh-Dompreh sympathised with the traders and said the Minority will keep raising the issue in Parliament until market activity normalises. He assured them that the caucus will push for concrete steps to ease the cash constraints affecting small-scale traders.

The Techiman Market is a major hub for yam distribution in the Bono East Region, supplying traders across southern Ghana.
