Bekwai, Ashanti Region — April 22, 2026
The Member of Parliament for Bekwai, Hon. Ralph Opoku-Adusei, has commissioned the refurbished Queen Elizabeth II Day Nursery School, marking a significant milestone in efforts to improve early childhood education in the municipality.

The renovation and retooling project, which cost thousands of cedis, was fully financed by the MP as part of his commitment to enhancing educational infrastructure and ensuring a conducive learning environment for young children.

Established in 1954, the facility had seen little to no major upgrade for decades. Prior to the renovation, the school was in a deplorable state, with weakened structures, insufficient furniture, and a shortage of essential teaching and learning materials. The situation posed challenges to teachers and pupils, raising concerns among parents and education authorities.

The centre will now give traders at the Bekwai market the opportunity to enroll their children while they conduct business, improving access to early childhood care.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, Hon. Opoku-Adusei, an old pupil of the school, described the project as a personal commitment to give back to the institution that laid the foundation for his academic journey.

“Children deserve to be nurtured in safe and well-equipped environments. The previous condition of the school fell short of acceptable standards,” he said. “Quality education begins at the early stages and must be supported by adequate infrastructure, proper furniture, and relevant learning materials. It is unacceptable for such an important institution to be left in a state of neglect for decades.”

Also addressing the gathering, Mrs. Letricia Obeng, Bekwai Municipal Director of Education, commended the MP for his commitment. She called on corporate organisations, philanthropists, and development partners to support the rehabilitation of other schools in the municipality facing similar infrastructural challenges.

Traditional leaders of Bekwai also commended Hon. Ralph Opoku-Adusei for the intervention.

The event was attended by traditional leaders, officials of the Bekwai Municipal Assembly, representatives from the Ghana Education Service, teachers, parents, and pupils.
The newly refurbished facility is expected to significantly enhance teaching and learning at the nursery level, providing a safer, more comfortable, and stimulating environment for children. The project also stands as a testament to the importance of investing in early childhood education as a foundation for national development.
